The British Council is supporting organisations with grants to combat Climate change in the Country.
In a meeting organised by Commonwealth Alumni at Hilton Hotel, he Country Director British Council Chilufya Besa said “In the past, we have worked with ten organisations in different areas addressing the threat that we face in climate change." Besa said they have several programs that they have funded under Active Citizens programs. He cited ‘Trash for Treasure’ which is working on collecting trash and converting it into useful things like bottles and decoration, adding that they make money out of that. The money is then used to support women within their communities.
He said the organisations are not only addressing the important issue of climate change but are also providing an income to vulnerable groups. “The organisations got small grants but have been able to train these into a program that has been running sustainably on their own and without any further funding. This is important because it becomes a solution owned by the community and its benefiting their own communities,’’ Besa said.
Patricia Nakitto from Climate Smart Youth Action Network said they received sh1.5m from the program and they used the money to train communities how to use things that damage the environment in farming. Rohan Ahumuza said she came up with a 'Social Action' project after attending a training organised by the British Council, adding that her ‘Trash to Treasure’ does not require a lot of capital.
